Program requirements

The Ph.D. in Civil Engineering requires a minimum of:

  • 30 coursework hours 
  • 12 dissertation hours

Students entering the program with a Master of Science in Civil Engineering will have 12 coursework hours of the 30 coursework-hour requirement waived. As a result, they are only required to complete 18 coursework hours and 12 dissertation hours. 

Students entering the program with a bachelor's degree will earn their master's degree in civil engineering on the way to earning their Ph.D. by completing 24 graduate-level coursework hours, 18 doctoral-level coursework hours and 12 dissertation hours.

Program benchmarks

  • Complete a qualifying exam if requested by your research advisor. If required, it will be administered by the graduate committee in conjunction with the research advisor during your first year.
  • Pass a comprehensive exam administered by your research advisor and supervisory committee. 
  • Successfully defend your dissertation. 
  • Submit your journal publications.

Application Details

Application procedures and requirements

1) Prepare required documentation, including:

  • Official transcripts from all previously attended institutions
  • A 300-word statement of purpose that explains your goals and objectives in pursuing the Ph.D. The statement should indicate which civil engineering sub-discipline you are interested in.
  • Three letters of recommendation from individuals who are academically and professionally qualified to assess your ability to pursue doctoral work, including professors at previous institutions or mentors at work.

2) Complete the online application. Please be sure to pay applicable domestic or international program fees.

3) Make sure you meet discipline-specific requirements, which are listed in the Academic Catalog.

4) Consider identifying and contacting possible research advisors before applying to secure commitment from at least one doctoral faculty for supervision of research and possible assistantships.

Application deadlines

  • Applications are reviewed on a rolling basis for the Fall and Spring Semesters, with decisions made on a case-by-case basis without specific cut-off dates for receipt and review of new applications.
