About

Dr. Xiaobo Chen is currently a Professor of Chemistry at UMKC. He joined UMKC at 2011 after worked in University of California- Berkeley & Berkeley National Laboratory following his Ph.D. at Case Western Reserve University. His research interests include nanomaterials for renewable energy (H2 production, clean fuel generation, rechargeable batteries/supercapacitors, CO2 conversion, etc) and sustainable environment (CO2 reduction, pollution removal, self-cleaning materials, plastic reuse, etc) towards a better future.

Degrees

Ph.D., Chemistry, Case Western Reserve University, 2005
M.S., Chemistry, Dalian Institute of Chemical Physics, Chinese Academy of Sciences, 2001
B.S., Chemistry, Peking University, 1998

Areas of interest
  • Nanomaterials synthesis and characterizations
  • Photo/electro/catalysts design and evaluation
  • H2 production through photocatalysis/electrocatalysis
  • CO2 conversion into fuels (CO, methane, formic acid, acetic acid, ethanol, etc.) through photocatalysis/electrocatalysis
  • N2 conversion into ammonia/hydrazine through photocatalysis/electrocatalysis
  • Organic pollutant/metal ion removal
  • Microwave shielding materials tests and evaluation
  • General materials characterizations (UV-vis absorption, fluorescence, Raman, X-ray diffraction, ESR, microwave dielectric/magnetic, surface area/porosity, etc)
