Kathleen Kilway is the Chair of the Chemistry Department and a Curators Distinguished Teaching Professor. She joined UMKC in 1996. She was a postdoctoral research associate at University of California, Berkeley and Faculté des Sciences de St. Jérôme, Marseilles, France.
Her research group focuses in two major areas: the synthesis of the monomers, photoinitiation studies, analytical testing, and other related research on biomaterials (i.e., bone cement alternatives) and the design and study of twisted polycyclic aromatic and linear scenes.
Academic credentials
B.S., St. Mary’s College (Notre Dame, IN) (1985)
M.S., Chemistry, University of California, San Diego (1987)
Ph.D., Chemistry, University of California, San Diego (1992)
Research interests
Conformational analysis; synthesis of twisted polycyclic aromatic compounds; molecular assembly of organonitriles and silver salts; synthesis and studies of cyclopropanes; experimental studies of dental-relevant monomers; bone cement, spacer, and antifungal/antibiotic materials development; theoretical modeling of carboxylates on copper surfaces; and theoretical and experimental measurements of hydrogen bonding.
