Federal Aviation Regulations, Aircraft Information Manual and Kansas City Sectional chart are provided. Meal and parking are not included.

Depending on the season, wear appropriate clothing and bring gear such as a water bottle for working outside.

Course overview

The course provides students with the necessary theoretical content foundation needed to pass the FAA remote pilot knowledge exam in pursuit of the FAA Part 107 sUAS remote pilot certificate.

Additionally, practical flight training aspects will be covered through hands-on activities, including pre-flight checklists, maintenance, calibrations and more.

Finally, particular considerations for industrial applications, including structural inspection, bridge inspection, GPS-denied environments, etc., will be explored through various flight activities.

  • Commercial sUAS operation and logistics including pre-flight and travel consideration
  • Operations and hazard avoidance near high voltage and high EMF equipment
  • Automated mapping mission plans and related considerations
  • Evaluation of UAV characteristics to meet mission requirement
  • Special safety requirements and best practices
  • Introduction to remote sensing equipment
  • Travel with UAV components
  • Adverse weather considerations (pilot comfort, safety, aircraft performance, etc.)
  • Crew resource management for sUAS including radio procedures and division of work
  • Correct procedures for reporting and documenting sUAS mishaps

Unmanned aircraft systems used within the course focus on multirotors and incorporate both “easy-to-fly” platforms as well as more challenging platforms with reduced capability autopilot systems. Participants will have the opportunity to try several different platforms in a variety of flight scenarios.
