Master of Science in Civil Engineering

A Master of Science in Civil Engineering allows graduate students to develop specialties within a swiftly changing profession. Graduate students can choose from four specialty tracks – environmental and water resources, structures, geotechnical/materials, and construction management. The program is ideal for students ready for a challenge and professionals ready to advance their careers.

Graduate Certificate in Engineering and Construction Project Management

The 12-credit Certificate in Engineering and Construction Project Management provides professionals in the construction industry an opportunity to develop the project management skills that employers are seeking.

Certificate curriculum

  • Introduction to Construction Management
  • Project Management of Integrated Design and Construction
  • Contracts and Laws for Engineers or Construction Law
  • One elective from courses such as Project Finance, Capital Project Delivery Methods and Construction Planning and Scheduling

Students who have a Bachelor of Science degree in Civil Engineering and who complete the Engineering and Construction Project Management certificate courses may be eligible to have up to 12 credit hours applicable to the Master of Science degree in Civil Engineering with an emphasis in Construction Management.

Graduate Certificate in Structural Engineering

The 12-credit Certificate in Structural Engineering gives working professionals a convenient and flexible way to deepen their knowledge in structural behavior, analysis and design without interrupting careers. Engineers will find this information valuable in their preparation for the Professional Engineering and Structural Engineering Certificate Exams.

Certificate curriculum

  • Required core classes: 6 credit hours (2 of the following):
    • Advanced Reinforced Concrete Design
    • Advanced Steel Design
    • Advanced Structural Analysis
    • Prestressed Concrete Design
  • Approved electives: 6 credit hours (including but not limited to):
    • Any of the core classes listed above
    • Advanced Design of Structures for Blast and Fire
    • Seismic Design of Structures
    • Matrix Method of Structural Analysis

Students who have a Bachelor of Science degree in Civil Engineering and who complete the Structural Engineering certificate courses may be eligible to have up to 12 credit hours applicable to the Master of Science degree in Civil Engineering.

 

Interdisciplinary Ph.D.

The Civil Engineering program offers doctorate study through UMKC’s Interdisciplinary Ph.D. program. Interested students select engineering as a discipline when applying for admission.
