Welcome from the Dean

Welcome to the UMKC School of Science and Engineering.

It is an honor to serve as Dean of a school with such a proud history of educating scientists, engineers and innovators who improve lives through discovery, creativity and service. Whether you are a prospective student, current student, alumnus, faculty member, staff member, industry partner or friend of the School, I am delighted that you are part of our community.

I believe there has never been a more exciting time to study (or to invest in!) science and engineering. Every day we witness breakthroughs in artificial intelligence, biotechnology, advanced materials, computing, energy and health that are transforming how we live and work. These advances do not happen because science and engineering exist separately. They happen because they come together.

That is one of the defining strengths of UMKC. Our School brings together scientists and engineers under one roof, creating an environment where discovery and application naturally reinforce one another. Physicists collaborate with engineers. Computer scientists work alongside biologists. Chemists partner with materials scientists. Students experience firsthand what modern innovation looks like: interdisciplinary, collaborative and focused on solving real-world problems.

As Kansas City's urban public research university, we also have a special responsibility. Our success is measured not only by publications, patents and research awards, but by the opportunities we create for our students and the impact we have on our community. Many of our students are the first in their families to attend college or balance academics with work and family responsibilities. Their determination inspires us every day, and our mission is to ensure they have every opportunity to succeed.

In the years ahead, we will continue investing in research excellence, expanding partnerships with industry and government, strengthening graduate education and creating even more opportunities for students to engage in research, innovation, entrepreneurship and experiential learning. Together, we will build a school that is nationally recognized not only for the quality of its science and engineering, but also for the lives it transforms.
